Catalogue: Section 3: Nutrients And Additives: Canna Vega, Canna Flores, Hard Water And Deployment

Canna Flores (pictured) is a plant nutrient made by Canna and is intended to provide the correct nutrients during plant flowering ("Flores"). Different formulations are to be used for the vegging stage ("Vega") and flowering stage ("Flores"). Additionally, some formulations (not Canna products) are also available in different formulations to compensate for variation in groundwater. For example, many parts of the United Kingdom have clay soil or chalky soil. Clay soil is fine, but chalky soil may be high in calcium or other minerals, creating "hard water" which does not lather and deposits scale on the heating elements of kettles, washing machines and dishwashers. Your water supply may be taken from another area and therefore there is great division and variation in water quality. Where nutrients are not available in hard water formulation, such as the Canna range, additives are available to compensate, and can be tailored to your supply, if required. Please contact Esoteric Hydroponics to enquire about this service.

Canna Vega and Canna Flores are two part nutrients. Two part nutrient is generally of higher quality than one part nutrient because formulations can be created that would otherwise react in a concentrated form. The two parts are arbitrarily named "A" and "B". A one litre supply of two part nutrient consists of one litre of part "A", and one litre of part "B" - a total of two litres. Both parts are added equally to the nutrient solution. It is essential that both parts are used.

Nutrient is added in the following procedure:

  1. Guess, estimate or measure the EC or CF of the nutrient solution. A high reading indicates a large amount of chemicals in the water, which is hopefully all nutrient -;@}=.
  2. Calculate required amount of nutrient appropriate for the volume of the nutrient tank, reducing the dose for young plants or where "tip burn" has been diagnosed (a symptom of too much nutrient).
  3. Add equal amounts of "A" and "B" to the nutrient tank.
  4. Allow nutrient to circulate for 15 minutes.
  5. Measure acidity with pH meter.
  6. Calculate volume of pH adjustment required.
  7. Add solution to increase pH ("pH up") or decrease pH ("pH down").

 WARNING!   ACHTUNG!

Things go Boom!

It is strongly recommended that safety goggles be worn while adding or mixing chemicals: we have heard reports of dangerous reactions occuring. Most importantly, never mix "pH up" and "pH down".
